CORE: A Rundown of Teradek’s Live Streaming Distribution Platform

New year, new opportunities for IP video! As technologies like smartphones, HEVC, 4G/LTE and others improve and become more accessible, live video viewership is projected to see a substantial jump in 2018. With more demand for live multimedia, organizations big and small are looking for new ways to distribute content that can efficiently and cost-effectively reach more people.

So what kind of tech should you use to enhance your live production? If you haven’t heard about CORE, we’re here to give you the rundown. Whether you’re a live broadcaster, corporate communication tech, system integrator or just need a way to deploy video over IP, we’ve got the perfect solution for you:

What Is It?

CORE is Teradek’s cloud-based streaming management platform designed to enhance and simplify your IP video workflow.  Any Teradek encoder (excluding VidiUs) is capable of streaming to CORE, giving them access to  multi-destination delivery, remote configuration, monitoring and HEVC/AVC transcoding. Since the service is cloud-based, users can access the platform from anywhere in the world.

What Are The Features?

  • Stream to Multiple Destinations
  • Perhaps the biggest feature of CORE is the ability to live stream to an unlimited number of online and/or decoder destinations. When the video feed reaches CORE, it is replicated and subsequently sent to as many destinations as you want, all simultaneously. Want to publish to Facebook and YouTube? How about to 10 different Facebook Pages? Take your content anywhere through CORE’s simple drag-and-drop interface.

During the Great American Solar Eclipse, NASA depended completely upon CORE to publish 5 live stream feeds of the eclipse to 18 different destinations, all within a single CORE account. Check out the story here.

  • Remote Configuration / Monitoring
  • Since CORE is hosted in the cloud, your streams can be accessed from anywhere in the world with an Internet connection. This is perfect for those seeking to configure Teradek encoders remotely (resolution, bitrate, FPS) or monitor footage captured by your team while you’re away.

  • Transcoding HEVC -> AVC
  • Want to consume less bandwidth when streaming? HEVC is the next generation of video compression standards, achieving the same quality video as AVC compressions but at half the bandwidth. The only problem is that it is not widely supported just yet.

Luckily, CORE offers cloud-based transcoding from HEVC to AVC. With this feature, you can take advantage of the HEVC’s bandwidth benefits from encoder to CORE, while delivering your video in AVC to your desired destinations.

  • Archiving
  • Record your live video footage on CORE as you live stream for easily accessible proxy recordings that can be used for playout and/or distribution at a later time.

    Who Is It For?

CORE is excellent for live streaming or point-to-point video workflows. It gives operators complete control over their Teradek IP video codecs and simplifies video contribution.

Enterprise Broadcasters: Teradek encoders and decoders can be deployed at various worksites or office locations, allowing management to receive and/or transmit video to remote partners. Core simplifies the routing and configuration experience so enterprise customers can be up and running in no time.

Live Producers: Production companies can bring your client’s live streamed content to audiences on every major platform simultaneously. Even if the director and client’s are not on location, Core allows remote team members to monitor the event in real time from anywhere in the world.

System Integrators: Rent out Teradek encoders to clients and configure their units remotely through Core. Archive videos directly in the cloud and download at any time for post-production edits.

Houses of Worship: For houses of worship with multiple campuses, a single video feed from the main campus can be redirected by Core to all satellite campuses and any streaming platform destination simultaneously. This ensures top quality, low latency video at every remote location, while attracting online viewers that may not have been able to attend service in person.

ENG: Stream from the field to CORE and route that feed to the studio switcher (via decoder) for edits and graphics. Want to save bandwidth? Broadcast in cellular HEVC, transcode to AVC in Core, and deliver the video feed to various decoders at satellite / partner stations. Also send breaking news to live platforms by streaming to Live:Air Action.
